two years ago, on this fine day ... by jen geigley

Two years ago, I was in Vegas taking photos of these two on their wedding day.

My dear friends Erin and Brian were married under the Welcome to Las Vegas sign.
(And it was the coolest wedding I have ever witnessed.)

They invited me to tag along to document their wedding day with photos at the Neon Museum.
Happy Erin and Brian day, my friends. You two are a fantastic pair. xoxo.

Charley Harper/Kid Made Modern bird mobile by jen geigley

Man, life has been a little bit crazy around here since school started. I haven't been blogging as much, but I have been doing things. Knitting. Baking. Running Lo around to school and various activities. Hanging with the baby. And I painted this Kid Made Modern Charley Harper bird set. I even managed to make it into a mobile for Bowie's room.

I know you have seen these super cool kits at Target. Ugh. They are so fantastic. I want them all. (I saw Halloween Kid Made Modern craft sets the other day, too! Fun.) So this is the set I used.
Here's what the wooden birds look like before you paint them. Lots of nice outlines to guide you, which makes this super easy. Gotta love Charley Harper's illustrations.
The kit comes with lots of paint (more colors than you'll need, which is great.) And it's not paint-by-number so you can feel free to do whatever you want. The brushes are included and they're really nice high-quality art brushes.
Want to make a mobile? Paint those birds. Done. So bright and awesome. I went over the black lines with a Sharpie after the paint dried, and painted the back of each piece with a solid color.
After all the pieces had been painted, I busted out my favorite Kikkerland Gallery Mobile (I have used this mobile several times before with other random projects.) Clips plus birds equals mobile.

So now this hangs in Bowie's room. He loves checking out the bright shapes and colors. (Safety note: if you hang a homemade mobile like this in a child's room, be sure it's well out of reach. We don't need babies trying to eat painted wooden birds. Seriously.)

It's kind of hard to get a good pic of this thing (because it keeps moving and twirling) but trust me, it's pretty. Yay, Kid Made Modern. Keep the awesome coming. I can't get enough. Check out another Kid Made Modern project that Lo and I made a couple of months ago, right here.

last week in bentos by jen geigley

Here are the lunches I packed for Lo last week. I'll start off by saying that she quickly let me know that these lunches were not as cool as the Phineas and Ferb ones I made for her last week. (Ahem.) Lo had short school days again, so some of her lunches ended up being more snack-y. Monday started off with rabbit food. Rabbit sandwiches with jam, cheese flowers, Annie's bunny crackers, carrots and a strawberry.

On Tuesday she had Wheat Thins, two kinds of cheese, salami and carrot sticks.
The letter of the day on Wednesday was the letter B, so I cut out a couple of B's from cheese to put on top of two heart-shaped ham sandwiches and threw in some apple wedges and Nilla wafers. She also had a container of yogurt.
Thursday! A Hello Kitty ham sandwich with raisin eyes and cheese for the nose and bow, with slices of string cheese on the side and graham crackers and carrot sticks under the sandwich.
Friday was a bit rushed but I did a repeat on the apple wedges and sliced-up string cheese, with bear and rabbit jam sandwiches. There are a few Cheez-It crackers underneath the apples. And that was it for the week! Poor Lo has had a bit of a rough time adjusting to the crazy shenanigans of lunchtime in an elementary cafeteria, and she asked me last week to make sure her lunches weren't too big so she could finish eating everything. She's complained of stomachaches a few different days, and I think it's because she gets nervous about the whole lunchroom thing. (Unless I have somehow given her food poisoning. Sheesh – I use two or three ice packs each day to make sure things stay cold!) But I'm sure things will get better as the next few weeks go by. I'm hoping that these lunches help to put a smile on her face when she opens them up each day.

bright now by jen geigley

This insanely cool yarn from 222handspun arrived on my doorstep today in a perfectly perfect neon pink package, and my mind is swirling with ideas of things to make with it. I want to make a neon yellow hat. I could mix that perfect seafoam-y mint blue/green with some handspun gray or cream from my stash. I have no time to do anything recreational today, but I still want to whip up something fantastical with this, like right now. I am such a nerd and I am so excited.

my first Kindergarten bentos by jen geigley

This week Lo started Kindergarten, which means that this was my first week packing real, actual school lunches! She went to school four days this week and has been lucky to have a 'transitional' schedule (which means she starts off with shorter school days) so this was a good chance to test out my portions and packing skills. I decided to kind of go big this first week and make a Phineas and Ferb character each day. I definitely don't plan on doing these fancy lunches every single day, but I thought this first week was special so I went with it. However, I am telling Lo not to expect cartoon characters in her lunch every time. Although now I'm sure she does. Anyway! Above, we have Phineas: a sandwich, salami, two kinds of cheese, tiny fruit leather pieces for eyes, with crackers and a strawberry.
And Ferb! Again, a sandwich, two kinds of cheese, raisin eyes, cut-up fruit leather rolls, edamame and baby carrots.
This is supposed to be Isabella. (Whatcha do-in'?) I wasn't as happy with how she turned out, but whatever. Cheese, sandwich, fruit leather and a layer of carrots and Nilla wafers underneath that you can't see here.
And finally, Candace! She's my favorite. Her head is a quesadilla, with cheese for facial features and hair.  And edamame, crackers under her head, more cut-up fruit leather rolls and a strawberry. This was a ton of fun but I'm ready to move on to something different (and more basic) for next week. I also felt like I was repeating a lot of the same foods this week so my goal is to branch out more next time.

first day by jen geigley

(My heart.) Lo's first day of Kindergarten is today.
Kindergarten is a big one. You hear people say it all of the time. Oh, is she excited? Is she ready? How will you do when you drop her off that first day?
And I will tell you. She was hesitant. Ready. Excited. Nervous. But good. I kind of felt the same.
We got to school early and I waited there with my little girl in a sea of big kids, backpacks and parents. She nervously asked questions and I smiled and assured her that her first day would be great.
The bell rang. She climbed the steps, wearing her enormous backpack and we went in. Hugs and kisses and a quick goodbye. I know she'll be her fantastic self today.
She's good. I'm good. I left with a smile, a tear in my eye and a proud heart. My girl is growing up ... right now.
